About Me
Chaplain Smith is a Registered Nurse and a retired Master Health Sciences Educator, with St. Louis Public Schools and adjunct faculty member of Nursing and Allied Health, with St. Louis Community College. She is currently working as Owner/Instructor of a health and safety training program, offering Professional Development and certifications in CPR, First Aid and other basic topics to laypersons and professionals. In addition, Alverta is a member of the Educators division with the Westberg Institute and a co-author/facilitator of the nursing text book, Foundations of Faith Community Nursing, Participants manual, 2019 revision-Violence chapter.
Alverta served 11 years in the Missouri Air National Guard, she was the first African American Female, to enlist in Missouri in 1972. Alverta graduated from St. Alphonsus Rock High School, St. Louis Community College-Forest Park and Maryville University with an associate in nursing; she holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Webster University; Master of Arts in Education Leadership from St. Louis University; A certificate in Christian Counseling and Coaching with the National Association of Christian Counselors and is currently completing PhD studies with Newburgh Theological Seminary, Indiana. A recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship with studies in Senegal, West Africa.
In the St. Louis community, Mrs. Smith serves as a Chaplain, with the University City, MO, Police Department and is a Deputy Juvenile Office with the Juvenile Conferencing Committee (JCC), also of University City, MO. She is also a Minister with an organization known as Homicide, Ministers, and Community Alliances (HMCA),with St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. She is frequently involved in various community activities.
During the Covid Pandemic, Alverta served in the community with the University City, MO. Fire Department and the St. Louis County Health Department administering Covid vaccines to the community of University City, Mo and various other locations.
In addition, Alverta is a Faith Community Nurse, with the Westberg Institute, New York, and is a member of the Spiritual Care Association. Serves a member of Crossroads Outreach Christian Ministries, in Cool Valley, MO, where Rev Mary S. Thomas, is the Pastor.
Lastly, Minister Smith is the 4th of 11 children; married to Dr. Robert E (Bob) Smith; co-owners of Smith Optometry, and 45-year residents of University City, MO. Alverta loves to travel with husband Bob, and doggie Dusty, enjoys the theatre, and is an avid percussionist (Congas & Djembe).
Minister Smith and her husband Robert (Bob) just celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary.
